Florist Care & Handling
Sunflowers have unique physiological requirements and thick, fibrous stems that must be processed carefully to ensure longevity.
- Foliage Removal: Sunflower leaves deteriorate quickly and can pollute water grids. Strip away all lower foliage immediately, leaving only a few leaves close to the flower head.
- The Golden Rule: DO NOT use standard flower food with cut sunflowers—universal flower food can drastically shorten their vase life and yellow the petals. Use clear, clean water or a specialized hydration solution.
- Hydration Setup: Give stems a sharp angled cut and submerge them instantly into clean buckets filled with deep, fresh water. Allow 12 to 24 hours in a cool, dark environment to fully saturate before design work.
